This family has 14members led by dominant silverback Ndahura. The family is named after bitukura river along which it foliages. The family has 4 silverbacks (adult male gorillas); the retired alpha silverback karamuzi, rukumu and mugisha all of them peacefully co existing and submissive to the dominant silverback Ndahura. Habituation of the family started in 2007 and by 2008 it was ready for tracking. It therefore set the record of fast learning. Usually it takes 2 – 3 years of habituation training for a gorilla family but for bitukira the family was ready to receive tourists in just 15 months.
