First thing I want to say here is; that gorillas are wild animals and all wild animals pose some danger to humans if you don’t give them their space or if they threatened. Similarly gorillas too can be dangerous if they feel that you have invaded their space. They can be aggressive if the perceive you dangerous. That is why a 7 miter distance is always recommended during tracking.
Since gorilla tracking started in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo, there has never been any fetal accident that I know of resulting from gorilla attacks to humans. Therefore I can confidently say that gorillas tracking is generally a safe activity. This is because its done strictly to only habituated gorilla families that are very well used to human presence; and guided/led by professional ranger guides. The ranger guides have studded all the behavior of the gorillas and always know what to do in case there is some strange behavior. Also before the tracking starts, tourists are take through a detailed briefing about the dos and donts of the exercise and how to conduct themselves while in the jungle.
The only dangers are those emanating not from the gorilla threat, but with altitude sickness, difficult terrain during hikes, heat exhaustion and lack of fitness. These are not serious as there is always a way to go about them like hiring porters, use of stretchers, or merely walking at your pace. In conclusion I would say, every one can track gorillas. For us here at embrace Africa gorilla vacation can make that happen by organising all the logistics for you just get in touch with us.
